Description
When Glasgow School of Art campus was being redeveloped we produced an exhibition to reinterpret the iconic venue in new ways. The Victoria Café Bar (‘The Vic’) was being completely stripped out and refurbished, which radically altered the character of a place that had fostered creativity in Glasgow over the last 80 years and become a significant social reference point for generations of students, artists and musicians.
This renovation presented a fantastic opportunity to invite artists who had a relationship with the space to reinterpret the spaces in new ways. Every room in the building was opened for public access and the function of the spaces was reconsidered: the windows in the main venue were uncovered for the first time in 20 years to shed light on the huge assembly hall; an artist did an installation in the attic space above; there was a gig in the toilet and the bar was set up in the beer cellar. Here is a small selection of some of the works.
